New German gov’t want U.S. nukes to go

The new German government wants the United States to withdraw its remaining nuclear weapons from the country. The new policy is included in the 128-page Koalitionsvertrag (coalition treaty)  of Chancellor Angela Merkel. According to the agreement between the CDU, CSU and FDP parties, the removal of U.S. nuclear weapons will be discussed with Washington as well as in the framework of NATO.

In the years following the collapse of the former Soviet Union in 1991, the United States withdrew all chemical weapons and most of its nuclear arsenal from western Germany.  However, a  classified number of nuclear weapons remains in Germany, as is the case in Belgium, Canada, Italy, the Netherlands and Turkey.
