KABUL, Afghanistan (November 1) — Regional Command-South received a new commander during a ceremony in Kandahar Nov. 1.

Dutch Major General Mart de Kruif assumed command from Canadian Major General Marc Lessard during a ceremony presided by ISAF Commander General David McKiernan.

In his address, Major General de Kruif said, “A dynamic year lies ahead of us. The capacities and capabilities of the Afghan National Security Forces will increase. More coalition forces will deploy into Afghanistan . The voter registration process is under way and after summer next year it will be followed by the elections.”

He added, “I am very proud to command such fine men and women from different countries and cultures but united in their devotion to the operation. It is their professionalism, courage, endeavour and determination, which, together with our Afghan partners, will bring success.”

Major General Lessard said, “While the enemy facing us is resilient, ruthless and has little concern for the civilian population, there can be no doubt that the common determination and perseverance demonstrated by the [Islamic Republic of Afghanistan], ANSF and ISAF will ensure that we will continue achieving progress and success for the people of Afghanistan.”

“The last nine months have been busy and at times intense,” Major General Lessard continued, “Together with my Combined Regional Command Team partners, Brigadier General Zazai and Major-General Wahdat, we have evolved a true partnership based on brotherhood. It has been an honour to serve with them and to serve the people of Afghanistan . As I leave today, I will do so knowing that Team South will carry on the struggle for a better future for the men and women of Afghanistan .”
